The Diploma in Healthcare Ethics & Professionalism offered by the Bioethics Department of Shalamar Medical & Dental College addresses basic healthcare ethics and professionalism issues. It confronts challenges today’s healthcare professionals face, covering clinical ethics, research ethics, leadership, and professionalism. The unique curriculum offers doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, ethics committee members, policymakers, researchers, and hospital administrators a guide to developing professional competencies, ethical practices, and policies in Research, Education, and Clinical Practice.

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree from HEC recognized educational institution. This course is designed for students with the following profile:
- Doctors with MBBS/BDS with 2-year experience
- Nurses with BScN with the minimum of 2 years experience
- Other healthcare professionals with 16 years of education and at least two years of have the the work experience
- Researchers/ Managers with 16 years of education with two years post-qualification work experience.

MBBS Plus Program in Partnership with LUMS

The MBBS Plus program is an innovative program, established as a joint venture between Shalamar Medical and Dental College (SMDC) and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The MBBS Plus is a six-year (1+5) MBBS program, with the first year of studies (i.e. two consecutive semesters) taking place at LUMS followed by 5 years of studies at SMDC.
This program will allow students to broaden their horizons and prepare themselves for leadership roles in healthcare delivery, clinical practice and research.
For the courses taken at LUMS, a certificate will be given to recognize the courses studied. SMDC is affiliated with the University of Health Sciences and hence MBBS degree will be awarded by the University of Health Sciences.
What will I be studying at LUMS?
Students are obliged to spend their first year studying at LUMS for 2 consecutive semesters. In each semester, students must take 3 compulsory courses and up to two elective courses. The compulsory courses will include Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology Laboratory.
The elective courses can be chosen by the student, and include a wide range of subjects such as artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, information systems (The Total Credit hours will be between 12 to 18).
The MBBS plus program has the same fee structure as its standard MBBS counterpart. The first MBBS year payment must be paid upfront to SMDC.
The Shahid Hussain Foundation has graciously offered to provide students with a full scholarship for the first year of study at LUMS on a merit basis. (Hostel charges are not covered in this scholarship.) However, The first MBBS year payment must be paid upfront to SMDC.
All students will be eligible to apply for financial assistance for the MBBS portion of the program on a merit-cum-need basis.
For students who do not wish to opt for the MBBS Plus program and only apply for MBBS will also have the opportunity to take elective courses at LUMS during the summer term. Students will have to pay a fee per course.
The grading criteria would be different from regular LUMS students a pass /fail policy will be implemented for these students. However, students will have to repeat core courses upon getting an F,
A hostel facility is usually assigned to students during the Fall semester. Hence the availability of hostel rooms during the spring semester is minimal. Office of Student Affairs at LUMS would take applications subject to availability.
